Why Winchester Chimneys Are Not Like Everyone Else's
Winchester's historic district covers roughly forty-five blocks of buildings that date from the 1700s through the mid-1900s, including early log and stone structures and a large stock of Federal-era brick townhouses. If you own one of these homes, your chimney was almost certainly built long before modern lining standards existed. Many were never lined at all, and the ones that were often have clay tile that has cracked or shifted over decades of use. That matters, because an unlined or failing flue lets heat and combustion gases reach framing they were never meant to touch.
The other issue up here is water. Northern Shenandoah winters put masonry through repeated freeze and thaw cycles, and every cycle widens whatever cracks already exist in your crown, mortar joints, and brick face. Water gets in during a thaw, freezes overnight, expands, and pushes the masonry apart a little further. Homeowners in Old Town, Sunnyside, and the older streets near the historic core call us about this constantly, usually after they notice staining on the ceiling near the fireplace or a musty smell when it rains. By that point the crown or the cap has usually been failing for a few seasons.
Newer construction in Frederick County has its own pattern. Prefabricated fireplaces and metal chase covers are common, and chase covers rust through long before anyone thinks to look at them. Same result, water in the system, just a different path.
